During this three-hour training, we will gain familiarity with terms and concepts in order to best provide birth-related care to transgender, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming people. Together we’ll identify how the work of doulas, midwives, obstetricians, childbirth educators, etc., can improve the care trans clients receive in the childbearing year and beyond.

Workshop Objectives

  • Build an understanding of how and why trans communities and individuals are underserved with regard to healthcare, highlighting barriers to care.
  • Review and address barriers to health care and how, as providers, you can work to minimize and remove them in your own practices and communities.
  • Identify ways in which parenting support is less accessible to trans people.
  • Identify how the work of doulas, midwives, childbirth educators, etc., can improve the care trans clients receive in the childbearing year and beyond.
  • Identify respectful and supportive practices for reaching and serving trans clients.

We will ask participants to complete a few brief readings before we get together. Readings will be sent ahead of the workshop and may include:

HB Lozito is the Executive Director of Green Mountain Crossroads (GMC). GMC connects rural LGBTQ people to build community, visibility, knowledge, and power. HB has spent over 15 years organizing and teaching in the LGBTQ community. They are a Senior Fellow with the Environmental Leadership Program, as well as an alum of Marlboro College's Nonprofit Board Fellowship Program and Nonprofit Management Certificate program. They have facilitated workshops on working with trans clients at Birthwise Midwifery School as well as other Southern Vermont and Western Mass. social service agencies.

Abby Mnookin knew she wanted to work in the birth community after the home birth of her first child in 2012. After supporting a close friend during childbirth the following year, she enrolled in the volunteer doula training program at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, and then completed a professional doula training and certification program through toLabor. As a queer mom, she is committed to making birth work accessible to the queer, transgender, genderqueer, and gender non-conforming communities. In addition to her work as a doula, she wears many other hats including organizing parents for climate action with 350Vermont’s Mother Up! project, being an instructor at the Vermont Wilderness School, and a regular commentator on Vermont Public Radio. Abby lives with her wife and their two children in Brattleboro.
