Hi, my name is Melissa and I am a labor doula. I am also a wife, mother of two, friend, neighbor, and follower of Jesus Christ

My fascination with childbirth began even before I was pregnant with my first child. A friend had recommended the book, "The Baby Catcher" by Penny Simkin, and I couldn't put it down. Through these chronicles of a modern midwife, I got a glimpse of how amazing and diverse natural childbirth could be - and more importantly, the difference it makes when a woman is given the time, space, respect, and support to labor in a way that she feels safe.

In 2013 I was trained and certified as a labor doula through Childbirth and Postpartum Association (CAPPA). This equipped me with book knowledge, evidence based information, and hands on comfort techniques to serve women effectively during pregnancy, labor, and delivery. The passion and genuine heart behind the emotional care is something more personal though, and that cannot be taught in a course.

Since becoming a doula I have had the opportunity to attend a wide variety of births. While the details of each birth story are unique, my favorite part is always the look on a mother's face when she realizes that her baby is finally here. It is usually a combination of exhaustion, relief, triumph, awe, and pure love. I believe that birthing a child can be one of the most empowering and memorable moments in a woman's life, and it is such an honor to be a part of that.

Having the opportunity to experience childbirth personally has only increased my confidence in, and passion for the process. I chose to deliver both of my own babies in a small birth center under the care of a competent and caring Certified Nurse Midwife. Being able to bring my two children into the world naturally and without the use of pain management medications has been one of my proudest accomplishments. Of course I would be happy to share more about my birth stories with anyone who asks, but as your doula my goal is to help you be excited about and proud of your own story. Whatever that ends up looking like for you, at the end of the day I want you to feel that you had choices, support, and respect- and for you to be able to come away from it all feeling proud and knowing you gave it your absolute best.
